Why Hopton Haven Is The Perfect Family-Friendly Vacation Spot This August
My family and I had the chance to explore the well-loved Hopton Haven holiday park during the second week of the summer break, and here are our discoveries.
Hopton Haven promotes itself as a family-oriented retreat by the Norfolk Coast. Boasting two swimming pools, an extensive activity schedule and direct beach entry. Hopton is appealing to families seeking a fun-filled vacation. Our past vacations have not fully embraced an entertainment or child-focused strategy, which is why my two and five-year-old were truly excited. Being new to caravan parks, we were curious to experience it firsthand.
Just before your journey commences, you’re encouraged to download the ‘Haven app’, a one-stop resource for all holiday-related info. It’s user-friendly, aesthetically pleasing and a valuable aid for enhancing your vacation. You can easily book activities, reserve meals, order food and access vital details about your stay through it.
Arrival and Registration
The check-in and registration process was swift and efficient. The attendant noted our car’s license plate as we arrived, and after a brief name check, we were directed to our caravan. I didn’t even need to step out of the vehicle!
Upon arrival, we received our activity passes, granting access to restaurants, entertainment, activities, and main amenities. Remember to have them with you as they are required for entry at various locations. Despite the extra cost added to your reservation, the passes proved worthwhile, especially if you take advantage of the complimentary activities available. The schedule is packed with meet-and-greets, crafts, and sessions with the ‘Seaside Squad’, all included in the pass and ideal for young children.
Lodging
Upon arrival at our Gold Caravan, the top-tier choice at this location, it was evident that the balconies in our vicinity overlooked each other. We were initially concerned about the potential lack of privacy, especially considering the standout feature of the Gold caravans being the expansive wrap-around balcony.
Inside the caravan, we were impressed by the cleanliness, amenities, and layout. Plush carpets and cozy sofas adorned the living room. The bedrooms featured comfortable beds with top-notch linens. The kitchen was fully equipped, modern, and stylish. Apart from cookware and dining essentials, the lodging is entirely self-catering, so following the packing recommendations on the Haven website made our stay hassle-free.
Staying in the gold caravan elevated our experience. Extra features like an additional bathroom, hairdryer, and towels came in handy at various points. We were pleasantly surprised to almost forget we were in a caravan, thanks to the well-designed privacy curtains that addressed our initial privacy concerns.
We were fortunate to enjoy great weather during our stay, and despite the absence of air conditioning, the caravan felt airy and comfortable. The numerous windows, including some on the ceiling and sizable sliding doors leading to the balcony, offered a delightful ambiance. Being able to crack open the windows for fresh air while maintaining security was a nice touch. The surroundings of the caravans, with well-maintained lawns and privacy bushes, added to the overall appeal.
Facilities and Leisure
On our initial evening, we dined at The Garden House, the on-site eatery that I had previously booked. Upon receiving sticky menus, our expectations for a delightful meal began to wane. The food was unpalatable and visually unappealing.
We sampled items from the starters, mains, and kids’ menu, all haphazardly arranged on the plates. While the menu boasted a variety of vegan, vegetarian, and other choices, the dishes lacked seasoning, and the chips were soggy. Nachos were lazily smothered in cheese sauce with dips on the side. Both the quality of ingredients and the presentation left much to be desired. The staff were kind and service was adequate, but the dining experience fell short of expectations.
We also tried the takeaway pizza from Papa John’s, a step up from the restaurant fare but still below anticipated standards. Enjoying the meal on one of the beachside picnic spots overlooking the sea salvaged the experience. Improvement in food quality and presentation is essential before considering dining there again.
The bar and restaurant remained open throughout the day, offering Costa Coffee and cold beverages. Service quality varied among staff members, indicating a lack of consistent training, particularly in preparing hot drinks. Adequately preparing the team for peak periods could address these issues effectively,
These challenges may potentially be resolved by the conclusion of the summer.
Hopton features both an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, which appeared more striking in the photos. The indoor pool caters more to children with a slide, toddler pool, and some aquatic attractions. The outdoor pool was mainly used by adults and older kids but offered more space. Despite the excellent weather during our visit, even a stay here in rainy conditions would have been tolerable due to the abundance of indoor activities available. The facility employs a reservation system to prevent overcrowding, and it seemed effective as none of the areas felt excessively crowded.
Our visit was spontaneous, and we were concerned that we might not secure spots for certain activities since bookings could be made up to 12 weeks in advance. Fortunately, this issue didn’t pose a significant problem as we could inquire on-site, and they would try to accommodate us.
We had the opportunity to participate in a diverse array of activities offered. Easily accessible through the app, each activity specifies an age group, making it easier to choose those suitable for our children. The activities were well-planned, enjoyable, and worth the cost (ranging from free to £22 per child). The staff was exceptionally friendly, enhancing our overall experience. I was pleasantly surprised by the small group sizes (even during peak summer) which created an intimate atmosphere.
We joined the Seaside Squad Make-A-Bear Party, Inflatable Arena, Dinosaur Fossil Adventures, and Magical Makers and Balloon Modelling. The Magical Makers activity was our favorite, and the kids remained engaged with their take-home kits for hours. It was a fantastic family experience that we all enjoyed.
The less expensive activities appeared to sell out rapidly. If that happens to you, don’t fret as there are numerous on-site activities available that do not require booking in advance.
Hopton Haven boasts direct beach access, which we fully took advantage of during our stay. The beach was picturesque, with multiple pathways leading down to the shore. I highly recommend bringing beach toys, but if you forget, don’t worry as the on-site mini supermarket sells them. The primary play area within the Activities center was modest and slightly worn, but exploring the other play spaces across the site proved worthwhile. We discovered charming play spots nestled under tree shade and relished exploring the park’s varied landscapes.
The site exuded a sense of safety, cleanliness, and good maintenance. We encountered a minor issue on the exterior of our caravan, and after a quick call, someone promptly arrived to resolve it, even outside regular hours. The staff were eager to assist and took the time to provide explanations or guidance.
Final assessment
Overall, Hopton Haven delivers a fantastic family retreat. With abundant entertainment for children, parents can truly unwind, and our entire family felt relaxed and content after our stay.
To maximize your stay, my recommendation is to steer clear of onsite dining options and instead allocate your budget towards the activities, as they all provided exceptional fun.
