Water holds a mystical allure for youngsters; it’s captivating, gleaming, and a prime tool for chaos, whether found in the sea, a pool, a tub, or even a puddle. Whenever they’re near a watery expanse, the temptation is irresistible, and as a guardian, that’s a source of heightened anxiety.

Children aren’t always stellar at reigning in their spontaneous desires, hence as their guardians, we ought to step up our watchfulness. The sobering fact remains that even proficiency in swimming isn’t a foolproof safeguard for youngsters around water—on occasion, it might even give a deceptive assurance to both offspring and parent.

We should exercise maximum caution, particularly throughout the summertime. The sea’s unpredictability and the usual tumult of pools heighten concerns. Often, inadvertent lapses in supervision or sheer unawareness of a child’s proximity to water lead to drownings. The impulsiveness and speed of children spell potential danger.

So, what proactive measures can we adopt? What essential knowledge should we possess to ensure our children’s aquatic safety? We’ve consulted several specialists to glean deeper insights into water safety protocols.

Zack Zarrilli, ex-firefighter and EMT and leader of SureFire CPR, suggests a valuable strategy for child safety by the water: “Consistently allocate a ‘water watcher.’ This person’s sole responsibility should be supervising the pool activities,” he advises. That means no distractions such as smartphones, reading materials, or beverages.

Dr. Perno, agrees: “Often, multiple adults might be conversing nearby, but none may be specifically tasked with watching the children. It’s an issue when supervision is mistakenly assumed to be another’s responsibility.” This can be gravely erroneous.

Moreover, dressing your children in vivid neon swimwear—colors like orange, yellow, or green—are suggested as they stand out the most in water visibility tests by experts. In contrast, pale blue and white attire tend to blend in, making it harder to spot youngsters underwater.

It’s crucial to recognize that drowning can happen quietly and within seconds, Zarrilli notes. “One common false belief is that a struggling child would make noise – that’s often not the case,” he explains. “Drowning incidents are frequently silent.”

Zarrilli also underscores the necessity of a fence encircling the pool area, along with ensuring that doors leading outside remain closed to prevent unintended access to the pool by children. “Youngsters are naturally curious, and pools are inherently attractive to them,” Dr. Perno reinforces.

Issues with water safety often originate not from neglectful parenting but from brief distractions amid the vibrant chaos that marks daily life, leading to occasions when young, inquisitive ones move towards a body of water, or when a guardian’s focus is momentarily diverted elsewhere.

What steps should be taken to ensure your children’s safety at the seashore?

“The seashore presents a set of challenges akin to the pool,” Zarrilli mentions. “Maintain a dedicated water watcher, and stay alert to the risks posed by waves and currents that can sweep children out to sea.” He recommends that swimwear for children be practical to avoid being laden by sand or weighed down by garments that soak up water and become heavy. “Establishing your spot as close to a lifeguard post as possible is always a prudent move, for prompt assistance is vital in case of an emergency. Immediate CPR can be lifesaving.”

As responsible adults, it’s important to be fully aware of the nature of the aquatic environment. Pose questions such as, what is the speed of the underwater drop-off? Are there branches or unseen hazards submerged? How profound is the water in which children swim or dive? Are there undercurrents or riptides to acknowledge? Are there jellyfish present that could pose danger?”

Always be attentive to any signage at beach entrances concerning tides and currents. Heed lifeguard alerts and abide by their guidance.

Which indicators of trouble or risk should parents be vigilant for?

Noting signs of potential emergency is critical, according to Zarrilli. “Fatigue, persistent coughing, and labored breathing warrant attention, but silence is also a frequent precursor to trouble,” he cautions. Look for signs such as feeble paddling or a vertical posture in the water, which suggests difficulty in staying above water.

“Post-incident vigilance is imperative,” Dr. Perno warns. “Rapid, race-like breathing in a resting child is suspect.” Following a close call, coughing usually abates quickly, but it’s worth noting if it persists. Excessive drowsiness is another red flag. Should any of these symptoms develop after a near-drowning incident, immediate emergency room evaluation is necessitated.

What must parents understand about dry drowning or secondary drowning?

Dry drowning occurs when vocal cords spasm and block the flow of air to the lungs, as Zarrilli pointed out. “This can be mistaken for secondary drowning, which happens when a child aspirates water into their lungs leading to pulmonary edema and breathing complications that may emerge up to three days after a water incident. If symptoms such as breathing challenges, excessive lethargy, coughing, or other distress signals become apparent after an event involving water, it is imperative to contact emergency services right away.

What is the paramount lesson parents should impart to their offspring regarding water safety?

Parents must ensure their offspring receive adequate preparation, Zarrilli asserted. “This entails providing swimming instruction and guiding children on how to behave safely near a swimming area,” he declared. It is crucial to prohibit running near the pool area (which may result in unintended falls into water or head injuries) and to discourage vigorous play in the water.

“It is imperative for young ones never to approach a pool without the presence of an adult. Maintaining a buddy system is a fundamental safety directive for all, regardless of age,” Dr. Perno supplemented. When out on a boating adventure, youngsters must adhere to the standard of always wearing a personal flotation device. Check for local regulations, as specific jurisdictions mandate the use of particular life vests for children up to certain ages.

The onus of drowning prevention is on the parents, who must remain alert, erect barriers around the pool, and make use of safety devices like door alarms, according to him. There must be heightened watchfulness during the summer period.

Zarrilli also underscored that, in the context of an urgent situation, parents are often the earliest responders. Generally, Emergency Medical Services could be 5-10 minutes distant in city settings, and much more in rural locations. “It’s of utmost importance to be versed in CPR and First Aid,” he stressed, “Given that with each minute a child remains unresponsive and bereft of breath, their survival likelihood diminishes by ten percent.”
