Affordable Trips To Help You Revamp Your Wardrobe And Elevate Your Style
Getting ready in the morning is nearly a thousand times more enjoyable when your closet feels revitalized and contemporary. There’s an exhilarating thrill in incorporating a fashionable item into your ensemble, snagging that dress you’ve been yearning for weeks, or seeking out a new top (or two) to complement your beloved shoes. Novelty provides a swift surge of dopamine. A sense of renewal ignites happiness. Yet, spending money—unfortunately—doesn’t achieve either.
Caring for and nurturing a family is costly. Few in the motherly community possess an unlimited fashion budget to utilize. Even if you do have access to such a fund, there’s much to appreciate in a neat, minimalist style of dressing. After all, I doubt any of us are aiming to construct and own a 27 Dresses-like, overflowing closet. Such a space can feel far from fresh, to say the least.
To put it succinctly: Spending money isn’t always feasible. And even if it is, adding more items isn’t always the best strategy. The thrilling (and, dare I say, motivating?) reality is that there are numerous free, accessible methods to revitalize a stale wardrobe. Here are seven cost-free suggestions to refresh your closet on a budget.
Purge Your Closet and Dresser
The fastest, most economical, and most impactful technique to refresh your wardrobe on a budget is to eliminate all the garments you only somewhat like (or possibly don’t even like at all). It’s all too easy for our closets and dresser compartments to become cluttered. Thoughts such as “I might wear that someday,” or “If my size changes, I might need this,” tend to dictate the styles we choose to keep with us as we go through life. Silencing that internal narrative and ruthlessly parting ways with anything that doesn’t spark joy the moment you handle it is vital.
If the joy principle isn’t definitive enough for you, consider these queries:
- Does it fit flawlessly?
- If it doesn’t fit flawlessly, will I commit to getting it altered?
- Is it free from stains and damage?
- Have I worn it in the last year?
- Does this item align with my present lifestyle?
If you answer “no” to any of these questions, set the item aside.
Also, assess for duplicates. If you have several items of the same style, critically evaluate which ones you actually wear. For instance, if you possess multiple pairs of straight-leg jeans or black skirts, ponder whether you truly love them equally (i.e., wear them all the same amount). Be truthful! I bet there are items concealed among your duplicates that would benefit from being outside the confines of your closet or dresser.
Once you’ve scrutinized each item (and I really mean every single one), determine which pieces can be donated and which are too far gone and should be tossed.
Evaluate Your Hangers
Although I’ve never actually viewed her show, I did listen to Marie Kondo’s audiobook The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. In the text, she specifically addresses a common misconception that I, too, had previously believed. This misconception is that one should keep as many garments as possible on hangers. In her book, Kondo supports the contrary. She suggests that readers fold as many clothing items as feasible, arranging them so that all items within a particular category can be seen simultaneously.
For example, I recently applied this method to my T-shirts by folding them neatly and placing them upright in my dresser drawer. Since this minor reorganization, I can genuinely state that I’ve started reaching for that drawer more than ever before. Instead of dreading a wrinkled jumble, I now feel excited and delighted to open the drawer and explore the options presented so neatly. They’re the same shirts—they simply appear infinitely better.
If, after decluttering, your closet still feels overcrowded, consider reducing the number of items you’re hanging. It’s astonishing how much visual space (and mental clutter) one item can consume when it’s displayed on a hanger. Opting for folding can provide much-needed breathing room.
Refold Clothing Items
Recently, I discovered that I was hesitant to open my closet door. My sweaters and trousers had morphed into one enormous, unfortunate, wrinkled heap. After completing your clean-out and assessing which items should officially retire from their hanger spots, take the time to properly refold your garments. It may sound simple, but merely refolding will diminish visual clutter and make your wardrobe feel instantly much more fresh.
Organize by Clothing Type and Color
If you haven’t done so yet, organize your wardrobe by grouping items of the same type. For instance, all dresses should be hung adjacent to one another, and all workout leggings should reside in one drawer. This creates an organization that your mind desires and simplifies the process of locating items. Within these clothing types, you can also organize by color. Establishing color gradients within your wardrobe is aesthetically pleasing and gives your clothing collection a lively, inspirational vibe.
Eliminate Shoe and Jewelry Boxes
I belong to the group of individuals who tend to store shoes and jewelry in the boxes they were packaged in. I’ve always thought this was a brilliant way to keep items safe and organized. However, in reality, this practice takes up an enormous amount of space.
Take a deep breath and recycle those boxes during this affordable wardrobe refresh. I assure you it won’t be as taxing as it sounds, and there’s a strong possibility you’ll find yourself wearing those items more once they’ve been liberated from their cardboard enclosures.
Conduct Wardrobe Maintenance
While it may take a little time and effort, giving your clothing and accessories some attention can significantly enhance the freshness of your entire wardrobe. Shine your jewelry and shoes, and take five minutes to sew the button back onto that cherished blouse you refuse to let go of. Although it may sound a bit unconventional, I genuinely believe that positive energy can be nurtured. Infusing some love into your wardrobe can restore a sense of fresh vitality that’s hard to describe.
Organize a Clothing Swap
Do you have friends with similar clothing and/or shoe sizes? Think about hosting a clothing swap. This not only provides an enjoyable way to part with some items that no longer serve you but also offers an exciting opportunity to gather with friends. Plus, you’ll have the chance to refresh your own wardrobe with new pieces without straying from your budget. Play some music, encourage guests to bring snacks, and enjoy revitalizing your wardrobe in the most sociable way possible. You might just surprise yourself with what new items you choose to bring home!
