Creative And Positive Ways To Engage Kids Away From Screen In The Digital Age
Cognitive reframing has become one of my favorite parenting strategies. If that term sounds foreign to you, it essentially means looking at a situation from a different, more positive perspective. For example, instead of labeling my child as “difficult” because they insist on dressing themselves when we’re in a rush, I choose to celebrate their desire for independence. This shift in viewpoint is often what I need to tackle the challenges of parenting constructively and calmly.
When I first started hearing screens and technology described as “tools” rather than things to avoid, it really changed my perspective. Like many parents, I aimed to shield my kids from the perceived harms of excessive screen time, but life doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, when dinner needs to be made or a work deadline looms, that episode of *Bluey* can be a lifesaver.
Those moments that used to fill me with mom guilt have now transformed into opportunities for creative problem-solving. I’ve realized that screens can actually enhance our family life and ignite a passion for learning. My children, aged 4 and 6, don’t own personal tech devices, like tablets or smartphones; they use such tools only with adult supervision. While they haven’t faced much peer pressure yet, I’m hopeful that our healthy screen habits now will set them up for responsible tech use as they grow. Here are the positive ways I’m incorporating screens into our family life.
One fun way to engage my kids is through curating our music playlist. Music opens up a world of language, encourages lively dance parties, and helps teach emotional expression—it’s truly magical. I’ve cherished music since childhood, having grown up with cassette tapes and CDs playing in my room. I wanted to pass on that love, so I let my kids create their own Spotify playlists and we use our Google Home to play their tunes during family time. It’s a simple way to bond and share joy amid our busy lives.
Video calling has also been a game-changer, especially for connecting with loved ones. This practice isn’t new—it’s actually the one exception allowed by the American Academy of Pediatrics for children under 18 months. My in-laws live overseas, so my kids have been video calling them since infancy. This connection has been invaluable, especially during the travel restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic, helping to maintain relationships and boost their communication skills. It’s a beautiful reminder that nurturing relationships is key.
We’ve also turned screen time into a fun learning experience by watching live zoo cams. My kids absolutely adore animals, and though we’re lucky to have fantastic zoos nearby, the chance to see animals in their natural habitats via live feeds has been an enthralling educational experience. Our go-to spots are the Smithsonian National Zoo for its adorable pandas and elephants and the San Diego Zoo for its magnificent tigers. There’s something about watching these creatures in real-time that just sparks their interest and curiosity.
Being a family that thrives on good food, we often search for recipes together. This not only allows my kids to help decide what we’ll cook—whether it’s picking up fresh fruits from the market or selecting a dinner recipe—but also weaves in valuable lessons about ingredients, numbers, and reading. Our home is filled with cookbooks, but I love how searching for recipes online feels modern and collaborative.
Exploring different cultures is another treasure we uncover using screens. My dream is to expose my kids to the vast world beyond our front door, and while extensive travel can be a challenge, technology opens those doors—even if just a little. We spend time looking up cultural traditions and holidays that are different from our own. This not only encourages a sense of curiosity but also instills values of kindness and acceptance. Knowing that our differences are what make us unique is a fundamental lesson I want my children to embrace wholeheartedly.
Reading is another bonding activity transformed through technology. My son has recently developed an interest in chapter books, even though he’s not reading independently yet. Bedtime has always been our special time for stories, but sometimes we find ourselves nearing the end of a book too soon. E-books come to our rescue, providing a treasure trove of stories at our fingertips through our local library. For a lifelong book lover like me, it’s incredibly rewarding to see my children embrace reading in all its forms.
In conclusion, while the world of screens can seem daunting, I prefer to view them as tools that enhance our experiences, encourage learning, and foster connections. By modeling healthy habits and choosing how we engage with technology, I hope to equip my children with the skills they need to navigate the digital landscape responsibly in the future.
